How a Psychologist Can Help With Your Victims Assist QLD Claim

By Dr. Siavash Bandarian, Clinical Psychologist
Attach Psychology | Trauma-Informed Mental Health Support

IIf you've been affected by a violent crime in Queensland, you don't have to face the aftermath alone. The trauma can be overwhelming, but help is available—from both the state and experienced professionals like Dr. Sia Bandarian at Attach Psychology.

This guide outlines your rights under Victim Assist Queensland, and how Dr. Sia’s trauma-informed therapy can support your recovery.

What Is the Psychologist’s Role in a VAQ Claim?

Psychological evidence is often central to a successful application—especially if:

  • The crime was never reported

  • There were no witnesses

  • The trauma is primarily emotional or historical

  • You’re applying long after the event (which is allowed)

As a psychologist, I provide a formal VAQ psychological assessment that includes:

  • The nature and severity of the trauma

  • Diagnosed psychological conditions (e.g., PTSD, anxiety, dissociation)

  • How the crime has affected your wellbeing, safety, and functioning

  • Your treatment needs moving forward

These reports are written specifically for VAQ caseworkers and decision-makers, using the correct language, format, and clinical detail.

How Attach Psychology Supports You

We don’t just help with paperwork. We support your healing.

1. Trauma-Informed Therapy

You can access confidential, compassionate therapy for:

  • Domestic or family violence

  • Childhood sexual abuse

  • Physical or sexual assault

  • Stalking, harassment, or coercive control

  • Historical or institutional abuse

Many survivors begin therapy unsure if they’re “eligible.” Through gentle, validating conversation, we help you understand that your experience matters—and that help is available.

2. Assistance With the Application Process

We explain the process clearly, walk you through required documentation, and liaise with your VAQ caseworker or lawyer if needed.

You can also begin your application directly through the Queensland Government VAQ Portal.

Do I Need a Lawyer?

Not always.

Many clients work solely with a psychologist and VAQ directly—especially if the case is straightforward. If your situation is complex (e.g., ongoing legal proceedings, high risk, or counter-claims), we can refer you to trauma-informed lawyers we trust.

Not Sure If You’re Eligible?

You may qualify for support if:

  • You experienced a violent crime in Queensland

  • You were injured psychologically or physically

  • The incident occurred within the past 3 years
(or longer ago, with a valid reason for delay—like trauma, dissociation, or fear)

You do not need to have reported the crime at the time it happened.

VAQ supports victims of:

  • Domestic violence

  • Sexual assault

  • Stalking

  • Childhood abuse

  • Physical assault

  • Family homicide (for loved ones)

Recovery Starts With Recognition

You are not being dramatic. You are not asking too much. You are taking a step toward healing, accountability, and self-worth.

Let us help you feel seen—and supported—every step of the way.
